There Will Be Works

There Will Be Works. - > There Might Be No works.
Concept & Description
There Will Be Works is an artistic project that explores the relationship between presence and absence. By strategically placing artworks in specific areas at irregular intervals without revealing their exact locations, the project invites audiences to actively search for or stumble upon the works. The time and place of the works’ appearances remain unknown, creating a sense of uncertainty and anticipation. The process of searching itself becomes an integral part of the artwork, while the contrast between discovery and non-discovery shapes the core of the experience.
After experiencing There Will Be Works, audiences will be guided to the next phase through a mobile web page—There Might Not Be Works. This extension of the project encourages participants to engage in street and documentary-style photography based on GPS coordinates within the city. By blurring the boundaries between artwork and everyday surroundings, the project prompts reflection on what can be considered a work of art.
Once a photograph is taken, it will be uploaded to the There Might Not Be Works platform, where a customized language model will analyze and interpret the image. This AI-generated textual description assigns new narratives and meanings to the photograph, further expanding the definition of "artwork."
Together, these two components form a dynamic artistic experience—transitioning from passive searching to active creation, and finally to machine interpretation and reconstruction. Through these shifting roles, the project creates an open-ended dialogue exploring the intersections of contemporary art, machine learning, and audience participation.
Project Explanation & Guidelines
There Will Be Works strategically places artworks in various locations at irregular intervals without disclosing their exact positions. This project creates a space for exploration and engagement, evolving over time. Viewers may actively seek out the works or encounter them by chance, making the process of discovery an essential part of the artwork itself. The project questions the presence and absence of artworks while investigating the boundaries between expectation and fulfillment.
The title implies a promise, yet the time and place of the works remain unknown. In this way, the project constructs a scenario of "there will be works," prompting audiences to contemplate the nature of experience and their role in it. The works may be left in place, abandoned, or reclaimed. Additionally, different combinations of works will lead to varied content and interpretations.
There Might Not Be Works, a related web-based conceptual artwork, extends the ideas of There Will Be Works. This project guides participants through urban spaces via GPS coordinates, encouraging them to create street and documentary-style photographs with the assistance of machine learning.
Instructions & Rules
-For more details, visit the project website: therewillbeworks.com.
-The artist will announce the presence of works in various locations, but their exact form and position will remain undisclosed. Viewers must navigate to these locations using their mobile devices via GPS. Upon arrival, the web page will provide further instructions and details.
-The works will remain in place until they are damaged, taken, or removed—but there may also be no work present at all.
-Once a work disappears, a notice will be issued to inform that it is no longer on-site.
